1924 Hispano-Suiza H6C "Tulipwood" Torpedo by Nieuport-Astra

The 1924 Hispano-Suiza H6C "Tulipwood" Torpedo by Nieuport-Astra is undeniably one of the most iconic vehicles in automotive history, celebrated for its remarkable craftsmanship, racing pedigree, and prestigious ownership history.

Commissioned by André Dubonnet, an aperitif heir and gentleman racer, the "Tulipwood" Torpedo was created to be a truly exceptional automobile that combined performance, innovation, and elegance. Dubonnet's passion for both aviation and automobiles drove him to seek out a vehicle that would not only excel on the racetrack but also showcase cutting-edge design and engineering.

Dubonnet raced the H6C in prestigious events such as the 1924 Targa Florio and Coppa Florio, where it demonstrated remarkable performance, finishing 6th and 5th overall, respectively. Despite challenges such as tire issues, the car showcased the engineering prowess of Hispano-Suiza and the innovative design of Nieuport-Astra.

The most striking feature of the "Tulipwood" Torpedo is its stunning lightweight mahogany coachwork, crafted by aircraft manufacturer Nieuport-Astra. The delicate strips of mahogany, secured by aluminum rivets, created a distinctive and aerodynamic body that was both beautiful and functional. This innovative approach to construction represented a pioneering blend of automotive and aviation technology.

Throughout its storied history, the "Tulipwood" Torpedo has passed through the hands of notable enthusiasts and collectors, each contributing to its legacy and preservation. From André Dubonnet to Standard Oil heir Gerald Albertini to Bentley collector E. Ann Klein, the car's ownership history reflects its enduring appeal and significance in the automotive world.

Despite undergoing several restorations over the years, each aimed at preserving its originality and historical significance, the "Tulipwood" Torpedo retains much of its original woodwork and craftsmanship. Its status as one of the most famous Hispano-Suizas in the world is a testament to its enduring appeal and significance in the annals of motoring history.
