The Shelby EXP500 CSS Black Hornet was a 1968 Shelby Mustang recreation commissioned by Carroll Shelby in the early 2000s. Built by Legendary G.T. Continuation Cars, the authorized builder of classic Shelby Mustang recreations, it was designed to pay tribute to the original 1968 “Green Hornet” prototype, known as EXP500, which had been used to test advanced technologies such as four-wheel disc brakes, fuel injection, and independent rear suspension. Unlike the original’s distinctive green paint, the Black Hornet was finished in Raven Black with unique EXP500 C.S.S. striping, reflecting Shelby’s vision for this recreation. Constructed to accurately represent the Green Hornet at the stage when four-wheel disc brakes had been installed but before the addition of experimental fuel injection and IRS, the Black Hornet made its public debut at the 2008 SEMA Show, showcasing a modern tribute to a significant piece of Shelby history.
