The 1968 Shelby Mustang EXP500 Green Hornet Prototype is one of the most significant and rare Shelby Mustangs ever created. Only two notchback coupés were produced as part of an experimental project between Ford and Carroll Shelby. This prototype, often referred to as the Green Hornet, was unveiled at the SEMA Show after its restoration.
The EXP500 Green Hornet was ahead of its time, showcasing several innovations that would later become standard in high-performance vehicles. It was equipped with independent rear suspension (IRS), four-wheel disc brakes, and an experimental Conelec fuel injection system, all of which were groundbreaking at the time. The car also featured a special green paint and served as a test bed for exploring new technologies.
Though the Green Hornet never went into full production, its legacy lives on as a symbol of Shelby’s innovative spirit and a precursor to the performance advancements that would shape future Mustang models. The car remains an iconic piece of automotive history.
