The 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo Road Runner, modified by Koenig-Specials, is an extensively upgraded version of the iconic 930-generation Porsche 911 Turbo. Originally known for its challenging handling characteristics, the 930 was given a complete transformation by Koenig-Specials, a tuning company founded by Willy Koenig. Koenig, originally a racing driver and hillclimbing champion, began his automotive tuning journey with a Ferrari 365 GT4 BB in the late 1970s and soon gained recognition for his ability to elevate the performance of high-end vehicles, which led to his company expanding its focus to cars from Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Jaguar, and Lamborghini throughout the 1980s.
The Road Runner conversion, launched in 1987, was a radical reimagining of the Porsche 930. The car received a complete fiberglass body kit, reshaping its silhouette with Porsche 928 headlights, custom side mirrors, and rear taillights sourced from an Audi 200 Turbo, incorporated into a newly designed rear fascia with a pronounced wraparound spoiler. These cosmetic enhancements gave the 930 a significantly more aggressive and futuristic look.
Mechanically, the Road Runner was equally transformed. The car retained its factory cross-drilled, ventilated brakes, but upgrades included Bilstein shock absorbers, reinforced anti-roll bars, and a front strut brace, all of which improved handling and rigidity. The heart of the car, its 3.3-liter flat-six engine, was extensively modified with twin turbochargers, an improved air-to-air intercooler, a remapped ECU, and a performance exhaust system. This raised the car’s power output to between 480 and 550 PS, a significant increase from the standard 231 PS of the base 930, with boost pressure that could be adjusted by the driver.
This car’s combination of striking aesthetics and remarkable performance enhancements made the Koenig-Specials Road Runner one of the most impressive and sought-after Porsche 911 Turbo modifications of the 1980s. Now, the car will be offered at auction in March, allowing enthusiasts the chance to own a rare and expertly crafted piece of Porsche history.
