2000 Rinspeed Tatooo.com

Rinspeed unveiled the groundbreaking Tatooo.com at the Geneva Motor Show in 2000, introducing a concept that transcended traditional automobile norms. The Swiss company, known for its innovative designs, crafted a pickup truck that not only embraced the aesthetics of American hot rods from the 1950s but also embodied futuristic elements in line with the new millennium.

Tatooo.com, a play on words combining the emotional and erotic appeal of human body art with the three zeros symbolizing the new millennium, made history as the first automobile with an internet address for a name. The vehicle's website mirrored its unconventional nomenclature, reflecting the forward-thinking approach of Rinspeed.

The design of Tatooo.com drew inspiration from classic American hot rods, particularly the pickup trucks of the 1950s. The vehicle's lines echoed the dynamic and sporty appearance of those iconic vehicles. Notable design elements included a dominating hood with large air intakes, sweeping front and rear fenders barely covering extra-wide tires, and low windshield and side windows reminiscent of the hot rod era.

The doors of Tatooo.com were free of attached parts, featuring a remote-controlled electromagnetic opening mechanism in lieu of traditional handles. The truck bed, adorned with wide side skirts and modern light units, showcased a transparent and indestructible Lexan plate in the center of the tailgate, providing a lighter appearance to the vehicle's rear.

Under the massive front-hinged hood resided a powerful 5.7-liter V8 aluminum engine generating an impressive 409 horsepower at 5,800 rpm, with a maximum torque of 555 Nm at 4,350 rpm. The dual exhaust system with striking Remus tailpipes added a robust sound characteristic of hot rods. The vehicle boasted ultra-wide and ultra-low Continental SportContact tires (245/35 ZR 20 in the front and 295/40 ZR 20 in the rear) for optimal grip. Accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h took a mere 5.9 seconds, reaching a top speed of 245 km/h.

Tatooo.com featured a pneumatic suspension system that maintained perfect vehicle leveling at all times. With an infinite number of suspension settings available at the push of a button, the system allowed adjustments in ride firmness and ride height based on terrain, speed, or road conditions.

In terms of technology, Rinspeed introduced the "X-Tra-Lift" lifting mechanism, which underwent intensive development. This innovative system, with patents pending, facilitated linear lift without a center of gravity. The lifting mechanism, integrated into the vehicle design, was specifically designed for loading and unloading cargo.

The interior of Tatooo.com reflected a creative and futuristic design, featuring materials such as imitation African mamba snake leather, woven beige leather from Italy, and terracotta-colored plastic floor covering. The interior space was complemented by a high-tech Sony stereo system, mobile entertainment options including a fast-installing Sony PlayStation with a 7-inch LCD monitor, and a chrome-like finish called SLC ("Surface Like Chrome") applied to various elements inside and outside the vehicle.

Additionally, Tatooo.com showcased innovative cargo options, including the "Breathing Observation Bubble" (B.O.B.), a new diving apparatus produced in Florida. The cargo area also accommodated a customized Ducati Monster 900 S with chrome styling for easy transport.

Tatooo.com was not merely a concept but a fully street-legal vehicle conforming to all current EU regulations. This pioneering creation once again demonstrated Rinspeed's commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive design and technology.
