The 2001 Nissan Chappo Concept, revealed at the Geneva Motor Show, showcased a unique approach, designed from the inside out. With an unconventional appearance resembling a "fridge on wheels," the emphasis was on creating an innovative interior space.
Featuring a wide door on the starboard side that opens in both directions, the Chappo's interior replaced the front passenger seat with a multifunctional area for work and relaxation. The cabin boasted a flat-screen TV under a glass ceiling, a pull-out table with a laptop computer, and seats that could slide and rotate 180 degrees. A small luggage compartment beneath the floor extended automatically along with the rear bumper.
The Chappo's design targeted a future generation of city car users, envisioning the vehicle as a "living-room on wheels." The interior aimed to serve as a social space for relaxation, work, music, videos, web surfing, and interactive games. The concept integrated Japanese design themes, drawing inspiration from traditional tearooms and incorporating tatami texture and circular windows.
Designed for cross-national young individuals with a high disposable income, the Chappo offered flexibility, allowing users to customize their space. The exterior design featured a square, iconic, and asymmetric approach, with a large L-shaped glass roof panel reflecting the interior layout.
The Chappo's interactive features included two information screens, a 7-inch monitor, and a 15-inch monitor. The 7-inch monitor provided user-oriented information through steering wheel controls or touch-screen operation, offering functions like satellite navigation, air-conditioning controls, and music system adjustments. The 15-inch screen, with a laptop-type keyboard, offered options such as television, DVD movies, games, internet access, and working capabilities.
The exterior design showcased functionality and distinctiveness, with asymmetrical features in pillars, mirrors, lighting, and other details. The body's soft grey color with hints of 'Chromaflare' pink and pale grey tires complemented the unique design of the Chappo Concept.
