2003 Dodge Avenger Concept

Unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the 2003 Dodge Avenger Concept in Adrenaline Red Pearl brings the thrilling performance and style of rally cars, typically seen in video games, to American roads. This high-tech, real-life vehicle is built for those who seek adventure beyond the screen, offering the rugged durability and capability needed for diverse driving conditions.

"Rally cars in Europe are known for their toughness," said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President – Design, Chrysler Group. "In North America, such vehicles are usually only seen in video games. But why limit someone with an active lifestyle to an SUV?" The Dodge Avenger delivers the same excitement and performance on the streets of New York City, Detroit, and Chicago as it does on the back roads of Vail, Napa Valley, or Cheyenne.

Bold Design and Performance

The Dodge Avenger stands out with its sleek lines and robust surfaces, giving it a powerful stance reminiscent of European rally coupes. However, it offers the practicality of a four-door vehicle, in line with Dodge's "do more" philosophy. Its wide track, muscular fenders, and unique fastback profile highlight its all-wheel-drive capability, while rear doors that open 90 degrees make it easy to load up with anything from skis to groceries.

High-Tech Interior

Inside, the Avenger’s interior combines high-tech athleticism with functionality. Featuring robust proportions, modular graphics, metallic accents, and a carpetless floor, it provides a cockpit-like environment for the driver. Four independent seats with four-point built-in safety belts offer a racing harness feel, while a center console with see-through storage bins adds utility. An integrated boom box in the liftgate underscores Dodge's active, outgoing image.

Engine and Transmission

Under the hood, the Avenger is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine paired with an A604 automatic transmission. Unlike traditional stick shifters, gear changes are made with steering wheel-mounted paddles for quick and smooth transitions, enhancing the driving experience.

A Unique Concept

The 2003 Dodge Avenger Concept, developed in collaboration with Mitsubishi Motors, combines the control of a rally car with the comfort and versatility of a five-door hatchback. Its striking design features, from the hard-faceted plastic body to the massive aluminum frame of the radiator grille and 20-inch wheels, give it a bold and aggressive look. Inside, the sporty-spartan style is highlighted by black leather, gray plastic, and aluminum fittings.

This blend of performance, style, and practicality makes the Dodge Avenger a standout concept that could appeal to adventurous drivers worldwide, even though it might face challenges in the U.S. market. Nonetheless, the Avenger remains a testament to Dodge's innovative spirit and commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive design.
