The 2003 Mitsubishi SE-RO Concept, designed by the Italian studio Coggiola, reimagines the minicar with an innovative approach, focusing on flexibility and leisure. This microcar, despite its compact size, is intended to evoke the experience of an airship, complete with a cockpit-inspired front and a "living room" at the back. Mitsubishi coined the name SE-RO as an abbreviation of "Secret Room," hinting at the car's versatility and appeal as a mobile social and recreational space. Aimed at male drivers over 35, SE-RO is designed as a lifestyle vehicle for relaxation and entertainment.
The SE-RO’s layout maximizes interior space by adopting a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration—uncommon for Japanese minicars. The aluminum body, polished for an aviation-inspired look, is crafted with soft contours, giving it a futuristic, almost airborne aesthetic. Inside, the clever use of space allows the front seats to swivel 180 degrees and the rear seats to convert into a sofa, creating a cozy lounge area with a table in the middle.
Built on Mitsubishi’s midship platform, the SE-RO uses a 660 cc turbocharged engine with a CVT, staying within kei car specifications but pushing boundaries in terms of versatility and design. The rear seats can be adjusted for different uses: they fold flat to provide a workspace or extra storage, or they create a flat surface for luggage. This design emphasizes the SE-RO’s multifunctionality, ideal for city escapes and outdoor pursuits, representing a unique take on personal mobility and comfort.
