The 2003 Sbarro GTR emerged as an evolution of the previous GT-HDI diesel sports coupé, showcasing a more aggressive design and performance-oriented features. Developed by the Espera students from the 2002-2003 class, the GTR retained the striking bodywork of its predecessor but infused it with a sportier essence aimed at the competition.
Under the hood, the GTR is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 gasoline engine positioned in the rear mid-section, generating 220 hp. Unlike its predecessor, the GTR is equipped with an automatic transmission, reflecting a focus on ease of use while maintaining competitive performance. This powertrain adjustment enhances the vehicle's racing credentials while keeping it accessible for a broader range of drivers.
Aesthetic modifications from the GT-HDI are significant. The GTR features crystal-clear taillights and a gigantic rear spoiler, which not only amplify its sporty appeal but also improve aerodynamics. The vehicle boasts a longer wheelbase and a width of up to 2 meters, which contributes to its commanding road presence. The rear also features an air extractor beneath the apron and additional air intakes on the front and sides, emphasizing the GTR’s performance capabilities.
The design is further distinguished by a newly designed openwork front hood, small rearview mirrors, and striking six-double-spoke wheels. The choice of a blue hue enhances the car's lines and offers a refreshing alternative to the earlier gray finish. Notably, the elytra-shaped doors continue to captivate onlookers, adding a unique visual element that sets the Sbarro GTR apart from traditional sports cars. This concept exemplifies the blend of aesthetic innovation and performance engineering, marking a bold step forward in Sbarro's design philosophy.
