The 2003 SEAT Cupra GT Racer Concept made its world premiere on April 24, 2003, at the Barcelona Motor Show. This concept car serves as a precursor to the final production model, which was developed in response to customer demand by SEAT's Sport division and targeted at racing teams and individuals wishing to compete in GT races, such as the Spanish GT Championship.
The design of the SEAT Cupra GT draws inspiration from the SEAT Salsa and SEAT Tango concept cars, incorporating the brand's "auto emoción" philosophy. Notable design elements include the distinctive curved "Dynamic Line," created by Walter de Silva, which flows elegantly from the front to the rear of the car.
Under the hood, the Cupra GT is powered by a 2,995 cc V6 twin-turbo Audi engine, producing over 500 hp (373 kW) and delivering a peak torque of 600 N⋅m (440 lb⋅ft) at 5250 rpm. This powerful engine is positioned longitudinally in a rear central layout and is paired with a 6-speed sequential transmission, providing a rear-wheel-drive configuration.
The Cupra GT's performance capabilities are complemented by its advanced suspension and braking systems. It features independent double wishbones with Öhlins coil shock absorbers, all-around ventilated disc brakes measuring 378 mm (14.9 inches) in front and 355 mm (14.0 inches) in the rear, equipped with Brembo's AP Racing brake calipers. The car rolls on 18-inch six double-spoke alloy wheels fitted with tires sized 265/650 at the front and 285/680 at the rear. Notably, the wheels are secured with a single bolt, allowing for swift changes during races.
In terms of performance, the Cupra GT boasts an estimated top speed of 295 km/h (183 mph) and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in just 4.2 seconds. With its vibrant bright orange paint and sleek racing design, the Cupra GT stands out as a true prototype developed exclusively for the racetrack, reflecting SEAT's ambitions in the world of motorsport. SEAT Sport plans to commence production of a road-going version later that year, bringing the excitement of the Cupra GT to a wider audience.
