The 2004 BMW ICE Prototype was an experimental high-riding coupé built on a modified first-generation X5 platform with cabin components taken from the BMW Z4. One of the most striking features of the prototype was its sliding glass roof and rear hatch, which could be configured in a variety of ways, offering unique versatility for both style and functionality. The acronym ICE stood for "Integrated Concept Engineering", highlighting the vehicle’s innovative design approach. While the BMW ICE Prototype never reached production, it served as an important precursor to the BMW X6 SUV Coupé, which debuted in 2007, showcasing the brand’s shift towards the SUV-coupé crossover segment.
