The 2004 Covini C6W Prototype was the result of Ferruccio Covini’s decades-long vision of a six-wheeled supercar, inspired by the Tyrrell P34 Formula One car of the 1970s. Though development of the C6W began in that era, it wasn’t until 2004 that the first prototype was completed. Powered by a mid-mounted 500hp Audi 4.2-liter V8, the rear-wheel-drive machine took an unconventional approach to performance and handling.
Covini argued that six wheels offered several advantages:
Greater safety in case of a front tire deflation, as the extra wheel ensures stability.
Improved braking with four front discs, providing better heat dissipation and stopping power.
Reduced risk of aquaplaning, as the front wheels clear water for the rear ones.
Better ride comfort, as road shocks are absorbed across four wheels rather than two.
Improved directional stability, compensating for steering slack.
Additional springs and dampers for enhanced handling.
Since 2006, the C6W has been offered in limited production, but the exact number of units sold remains uncertain.
