The 2005 Daihatsu UFE-III Concept is a third-generation super streamliner designed to push the boundaries of fuel efficiency. Following the UFE and UFE-II concepts from earlier Tokyo Motor Shows, the UFE-III continues Daihatsu's mission to set records in fuel economy. This ultra-efficient vehicle features a three-seat configuration with a centrally located driving position and a large, lift-up canopy door for easy access. Its aerodynamics have been refined to an exceptional level, achieving an astonishing drag coefficient of 0.17, improved from an already impressive 0.19.
At just 134 inches in length, the UFE-III uses a 660-cc, three-cylinder hybrid powertrain. The hybrid system combines a small gasoline engine with electric motors, delivering remarkable fuel efficiency of 72 kilometers per liter (203 mpg), a significant improvement over its predecessor's 60 km/l (169 mpg). The vehicle’s lightweight construction, weighing only 440 kg, is aided by body panels made from composites and aluminum, narrow tires, and an electric steering mechanism. This combination of aerodynamics, lightweight materials, and hybrid power allows the UFE-III to achieve extraordinary fuel economy, setting a new benchmark for microcars.
