The 2024 Hyundai Initium concept SUV gives a preview of Hyundai’s next-gen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), set for production in 2025 as a successor to the Hyundai Nexo. Designed for both urban and rugged environments, the Initium embodies Hyundai's latest design language, "Art of Steel," which integrates robust aesthetics inspired by steel’s strength and resilience. Key visual elements include bold, longitudinal lines, plus-shaped lighting motifs in the headlights and taillights, and a heavily inclined rear window reminiscent of a liftback style.
Technical Performance: The Initium is powered by Hyundai’s third-generation fuel cell stack, an upgrade in power density and durability from the Nexo’s second-gen stack. Though specific details remain limited, Hyundai reports an expected range of 404 miles (over 650 kilometers) with three large hydrogen tanks and 21-inch low-resistance tires. The vehicle offers 204 horsepower and a 0-to-100 km/h acceleration time of 8 seconds, faster than the Nexo.
Safety and Technology: Hyundai has also focused on safety, incorporating a "multi-skeletal structure," nine airbags, and advanced monitoring systems. Additionally, the Initium supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, allowing it to provide up to 100 kWh of offboard power—enough to supply a typical household for about 10 days.
As part of Hyundai’s HTWO hydrogen brand, the Initium underscores Hyundai’s commitment to expanding hydrogen infrastructure and vehicle accessibility. This concept will be displayed in Korea at the Hyundai Motor Studio in Goyang and at upcoming auto shows in Guangzhou and Los Angeles.
