The 1928 Stutz Black Hawk Special was a land speed record car driven by Frank Lockhart. In April 1928, while warming up for a record attempt at Daytona Beach, Lockhart hit 198 mph. On his first official run, a seashell punctured his right rear tire at over 220 mph, causing the tire to explode. The car flipped multiple times, and Lockhart was thrown from the vehicle, tragically dying from his injuries. Remarkably, the car’s engine was later used at the Indianapolis 500, setting a new pole speed record 12 years later.
