1980 Renault 5 Turbo vs. 2025 Renault 5 Turbo 3E

Renault has unveiled the Renault 5 Turbo 3E, a strikingly modern, all-electric homage to the legendary Renault 5 Turbo and Turbo 2 of the 1980s. This new iteration merges the past and future, celebrating the bold design and thrilling performance of the original rally icons while embracing cutting-edge electric technology.

The 1980 Renault 5 Turbo: A Rally Icon

First launched in 1980, the Renault 5 Turbo became a sensation on the rally scene, earning its place as a performance powerhouse. Known for its mid-mounted turbocharged engine and distinctive widebody design, it delivered exceptional handling and explosive power on both tarmac and gravel. Its follow-up, the Turbo 2, carried forward this legacy with minimal changes to its performance credentials.

The 2025 Renault 5 Turbo 3E: A Futuristic Tribute

Fast forward to 2025, and Renault reimagines the Turbo lineage with the 5 Turbo 3E. Like its predecessors, it retains a rear-wheel-drive layout, but this time the power comes from two electric motors housed in the rear wheels, delivering a combined output of more than 500 bhp. The iconic widebody design has been reinterpreted in modern, aerodynamic lines, while the historic rally livery evokes memories of the original Turbo's dominance on the circuit.

Past Meets Future

While the 1980 Renault 5 Turbo was celebrated for its internal combustion engine and analog charm, the 2025 Turbo 3E takes the marque into the electric age with high-tech precision and sustainable power. Together, these two models showcase how far automotive technology and design have evolved over the past 45 years.
