2003 Jeep Treo Concept

Unveiled at the 37th Tokyo Motor Show, the Jeep Treo concept vehicle embodies Chrysler Group's vision for the future of the Jeep brand, merging innovative design with environmentally friendly technology. Designed to appeal to younger consumers, the Treo showcases a fresh interpretation of classic Jeep themes, such as the iconic seven-bar grille and a prominent windshield.

Design and Features

The Treo's compact, near-teardrop shape not only enhances aerodynamics but also provides a distinctive new Jeep signature. The vehicle is designed to comfortably accommodate three passengers or two passengers plus gear, offering an open and airy cabin experience. A key feature of the design includes rear-mounted high-tech bike racks that can hold twin Jeep Rubicon mountain bikes, emphasizing the vehicle's active lifestyle orientation.

Rugged design elements, including flared wheel arches and military-style tyre treads, reinforce the Treo's adventurous image. The exposed front suspension and tow hooks contribute to its utility, while the rear hatch with a large cutout facilitates easy access to storage.

Interior Configuration

Inside, the Jeep Treo continues the brand's straightforward and functional aesthetic. The steering wheel, pedals, and instrumentation are housed in a sculptured module that can be easily adjusted for right- or left-hand driving, enhancing its global appeal. The cabin features lightweight seats made of translucent material over a strong carbon fiber frame, and the rear seat can fold flat to maximize cargo space. The innovative design allows for the front wheels of the mountain bikes to be mounted inside while still accommodating a third passenger.

Despite its compact dimensions, the Treo's interior is designed to feel spacious, thanks to a large windshield and a glass roof that extends over the rear seating area.

Powertrain and Technology

The Jeep Treo is powered by two electric motors—one for each axle—providing full-time four-wheel drive capability. The vehicle is designed to utilize advanced technologies, including drive-by-wire systems and a zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell powertrain, positioning it as a forward-thinking option for urban mobility.

Production and Legacy

While the Treo was conceptualized as "the ultimate student car" to capture the attention of young urban drivers, it ultimately remained a single prototype rather than reaching production. Designed by a team at the Chrysler Advanced Product Design Center, the Treo was envisioned to attract a new generation to the Jeep brand, with hopes that they would later transition to more traditional models as they matured.

Overall, the Jeep Treo concept represents a unique exploration of the Jeep brand's future, blending ruggedness and functionality with a youthful, environmentally conscious design ethos.
