The 1993 Alfa Romeo SZ Trofeo by Zagato is now up for auction, presenting an extraordinary opportunity to own one of fewer than 20 factory-built racing versions of the iconic Sprint Zagato. With a current bid of €185,000, this car offers a rare chance to acquire a genuine piece of motorsport history in exceptional condition.
This SZ Trofeo (VIN: ZAR16200003001000) was originally built by Alfa Romeo (Fiat Auto S.p.A.) for the SZ Trophy support race during the 1993 Monaco Grand Prix. It later participated in the Italian Supercar GT series, showcasing its racing pedigree. Its first owner was the Alfa Romeo factory, and its second was former Formula 1 driver Andrea de Adamich, who used it for over a decade as a daily driver and for hot laps with VIPs. Unlike other SZ Trofeos, this example remains in its original condition and has never been converted from a standard road car.
The car’s documented history includes ownership by a Dutch gentleman racer and collector who preserved its originality and ensured its road registration in Germany. Over the past 30 years, it has been driven less than 22,000 kilometers, split between public roads and legendary circuits such as Monaco, Spa, and Hockenheim. Under its current ownership, the car has been meticulously maintained by Formula GT, with all servicing carried out to the highest standards. Notably, its underfloor recently underwent a dry-ice treatment, leaving it in factory-fresh condition.
Track-tested by motorsport legends Walter Röhrl, Karl Wendlinger, and Joachim Winkelhock, the SZ Trofeo has earned high praise for its exceptional handling, low weight, and perfect 50:50 weight distribution. While its performance figures might seem modest today, its agility and balance allow it to compete with much more modern cars on the track.
This car remains entirely original, with matching numbers, authentic badging, and a well-preserved interior and exterior. The patina reflects its authentic history, while minor stone chips and scratches add character without compromising its mint condition. It also comes with comprehensive documentation, spare wheels, and original accessories, making it a turnkey collector’s item.
As of October 2024, this SZ Trofeo is eligible for FIA historic motorsport, allowing it to compete alongside icons like the Ferrari F40 and Jaguar XJ220. This eligibility, combined with its originality and racing pedigree, makes it a highly desirable addition to any collection. The car is also perfectly suited for display at prestigious events such as Goodwood, Villa d’Este, or Pebble Beach.
With the current bid at €185,000, this Alfa Romeo SZ Trofeo is a rare and valuable piece of automotive history. Interested buyers should act quickly to secure this unique Zagato creation. The listing's description reads:
As documented by the car’s passport (VIN: ZAR16200003001000), its first owner was the Alfa Romeo factory (Fiat Auto S.p.A.), who built this car for a VIP to participate in the SZ Trophy support race before the Monaco GP 1993. Prior to and following this race weekend, the SZ Trophy would race as part of the 1993 Italian Supercar GT races.
The car’s second owner was Andrea de Adamich, who used it for more than ten years as his daily driver between his house and his racetrack as well as for hot laps with friends and VIPs. Important: this chassis is not one of the six cars used in his "Guida Sicura" racing school - these weren’t original Trofeos but converted road cars.
Through a misunderstanding, the Zagato was sold as part of a larger collection of race and sports cars, and in 2013 it ended up in the hands of a Dutch gentleman racer and Zagato collector, who road-registered it in Germany.
Over a thirty-year period, the car did less than 22,000 kilometers, split between the public road and circuits (Monaco, Spa, Varano, Hockenheim, Mugello, Red Bull Ring, Salzburgring, …).
Under the current ownership, the SZ has always been meticulously maintained by Formula GT, who can confirm this car hasn’t missed a beat and that everything is still original. The car's underfloor has recently enjoyed a dry-ice treatment and polish and literally looks like a factory-fresh car underneath.
The SZ was track-tested by Walter Röhrl (Spielberg), Karl Wendlinger (Mugello) and Joachim Winkelhock (Hockenheim), who were all equally impressed with the handling. The performance is very modest by today's standards, but the low weight, insane stiffness, and 50-50 weight distribution means that on many tracks it can compete with much more modern monsters.
This Zagato not only has matching numbers, but still wears the original badging and trim, and both the exterior and interior are cosmetically mint, with nice patina, as well as some stone chips and minor scratches.
While the ideal buyer would preserve and celebrate the originality and heritage of the car at events between Goodwood, Villa d'Este and Pebble Beach, it’s worth noting that since October 2024, this SZ is officially eligible for FIA historic motorsport, joining the grid alongside Ferrari F40, Jaguar XJ 220, 348 Competizione et al!
(FIA homologation form no. 297 Group B).
All in all, a unique chance to acquire an immaculate Alfa Zagato factory race car with a peerless pedigree. Less than 20 Trofeos were ever built, and the handful of race SZs that are still around are rebuilt, have had huge repairs - and no history.
