The Ford F-150 Lightning SuperTruck Concept is poised to make a significant impact at the 2024 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, scheduled for June 23. This electric SuperTruck, equipped with a powertrain featuring three motors, produces an impressive output of over 1,400 horsepower. Romain Dumas, a seasoned competitor and the current overall record holder at Pikes Peak, will be behind the wheel. The SuperTruck is Ford Performance’s latest electric vehicle demonstrator, building on their record-breaking success with the SuperVan 4.2 in 2023.
The F-150 Lightning SuperTruck has been meticulously engineered to perform in the extreme conditions of Pikes Peak. It boasts advanced aerodynamics, generating 6,000 pounds of downforce at 150 mph, and features optimized electric motors designed for peak performance. The powertrain includes three STARD UHP 6-Phase Motors and Ultra-High Performance Li-Polymer NMC cells, delivering more than 1,600 horsepower. Aerodynamic enhancements include a triple-element front wing, headlight ducts, hood ducts and louvers, front dive-planes, side diffusers, rear diffuser, and a multi-element rear wing.
In addition to its aerodynamic prowess, the SuperTruck is equipped with carbon ceramic brakes, Pirelli P-Zero tires on magnesium forged wheels, and a fully custom in-board suspension system. These features ensure that the vehicle can handle the challenging and varied terrain of the Pikes Peak course. The collaboration with STARD Advanced Research and Development has been crucial in the development and construction of the SuperTruck’s powertrain and controls.
Romain Dumas’s experience and expertise make him the ideal driver for this innovative vehicle. Having competed at Pikes Peak multiple times, he brings a wealth of knowledge and skill to the team. "After a successful 2023 climb, I’m thrilled to be behind the wheel again with this team and to help push the limits of what an electric vehicle can achieve on the turns of this legendary course," said Dumas. "In testing, the F-150 Lightning SuperTruck has surpassed my expectations, so we are hoping for some good weather to try and do something very special."
Ford’s participation in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb dates back to 1916, with a Model T completing the climb to the 14,115-foot summit in 28 minutes and 3 seconds. This year, Ford aims to break its own 2023 record set by the SuperVan 4.2, which completed the run in 8 minutes and 47.682 seconds. The event is a testament to Ford’s commitment to advancing electric vehicle technology through rigorous testing in challenging conditions. Mark Rushbrook, Global Director of Ford Performance, emphasized this dedication: "Our pursuit to the top of the mountain is charged by the commitment to make all our electric vehicles more capable, more advanced, and more exciting."
